In February of 2020, Monica began keeping art journals, in which she discovered acrylic paint, collage, and a desire for greater self-expression. That led to pursuing online tutorials and building skills on class lessons. In the spring of 2022, she began making mixed media pieces by combining collage techniques with watercolor and/or acrylic paints, first on watercolor paper and then on canvas and cradleboard substrates.
She exhibits artwork at the ZAAP Gallery in Zanesville, The Tollhouse Art & Gifts in Coshocton, and other local galleries.
Monica is heavily influenced by her affinity for nature: the shapes, colors, and patterns of landscapes, plants, trees, flowers, birds, and fish. She often incorporates an abstract or fanciful interpretation of these subjects whether as a primary focal point or as background elements.
The creative process for a mixed media painting most often begins with an idea which is prompted by an outdoor experience, a reference photo, or an entirely imaginary scene. Intuition plays a large part in the approach to her subject as well as the execution of paint or collage application, and color, pattern, or mark-making decsions.
